    Description

commemorating the 250th year of the city's founding
Antique Blue & White Souvenir Plate
    from Norwich, Connecticut
    ca. 1909
beautiful condition to please collector and decorator alike
Discovered recently in a fine Eastern North Carolina estate and today offered here for your enjoyment and consideration is this beautiful blue and white souvenir plate issued in
    commemoration
    of the 250th
    anniversary
of the founding of the City or Norwich, Connecticut. Our plate features a gently rolled rim with deeper than typical center well. It measures about 9.75" in diameter. The verge is highlighted in a geometric pattern all around while the
    center
of the plate bears depictions of numerous important landmarks of Norwich including; the Uncas Monument. the courthouse, Benedict Arnold's birthplace, The Old School House of 1683, and several others. The seal of the city is included and at bottom center a banner proclaiming the item to be a souvenir of Norwich with the founding date of 1659 and the issue date of 1909. M
    arkings
on the reverse side include only the word England and a statement that the item was imported for Disco Bros. Norwich, Conn. Disco Bros. seems to have been a popular dry goods retailer in the city during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The composition here is earthenware pottery and the markings found on the
    plate
don't allow us to identify its maker, though we assume it was one of the many good Staffordshire potteries in operation at the turn of the 20th Century..
You'll find this item to be in very good antique condition. It is fully damage free suffering no chips or cracks. No stain, discoloration, or hard water deposits are noted. Applied transfer decoration is fresh and presents good blue color. Surface wear is a non-issue as no scratches or scuffing are found to mar the fine appearance of the artifact. The only issue to report is an expected general crazing of glaze that's commensurate with age of over 100 years and with this type of pottery. It's
    a beautiful
specimen of early Twentieth Century souvenir ware and one that presents beautifully. It's also a very difficult to find specimen. But if you're a collector you probably already knew that. We feel like this piece ought to easily delight collector and decorator alike!
