Description
G033 Very rare Carl Linnaeus gold Medallic 8 Ducat Medal ND PCGS SP 62. PCGS listed as 1910 But it was struck in late 18th Century, Bergstrom 1910 page 89, Hyckert I:250:2. 34.6mm/27.8g. By Danial Fehrman. Obv. Bust of Carl Linnaeus right. Rev. Three crowns arranged according to Swedish coat-of-arms, radiant ILLUSTRAT above. Produced in honor of Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) who gained fame through his achievements in botany and zoology. This medal, struck during the lifespan of the original die (some die rust is noted on Linnaeus' shoulder) that was created in the late 18th century, displays horizontal die polish in the fields that produces lovely sparkling luster throughout. Delicate signs of handling are seen, but none are bothersome. Around 1900, the dies for this medal appear to have been reproduced, with gold striking being awarded for achievements in science. From observations, the two issues are fairly easily distinguished, with the new dies displaying much broader dentils at the edges as well as a year hallmark on the edge. Very rare in this state and ideal for the collector of world medals or Swedish gold. For US will be free priority mail with tracking.
