GOUDA POTTERY RHODIAN LANTERN – CLASSIC STYLE – VERY DECORATIVE !

Description

This is a super decorative example of Gouda Rhodian pottery – a lantern – with a lot of visual stuff – the colorfully vibrant hand painted shapes, along with the different forms of the opening, the handle, the cutouts, to let the light through, and the four downward sloping “chimneys”.
Condition notes:
There is variation in the green body color – darker to lighter, some “puddling”, glaze misses, and some lines. The body color is thin at the opening edges of the chimneys, as seen in the pics. There is crazing to the glaze – mostly in the interior which can be seen in the second to last pic. Also in that pic, you can see some left over dirt in the crack where the side walls meet the bottom of the piece. This piece was used, so there is some leftover soot in the crevices of the interior, where the loop handle and chimneys are attached to the body (pic) In one of the oval cutout openings, the worker’s knife took out a little extra ceramic (closeup pic with circle). A couple chimneys have light firing cracks where the curved “hoods” were joined to the body (closeup pics with arrows). That all sounds like a lot, but this is
hand crafted
, so there are some irregularities – not, made-in-a-machine, perfect. This is a fine piece of Rhodian Gouda. It is 9” tall, and marked, as shown on the bottom.
Please note
– as you can see, there is no actual word, “
Gouda
”, as part of the bottom marks, which the “
Gouda Design
” website says can happen. (On the secondary home page, find section on “
Marks
”, then, sub section starting with, “PZH stands for….”.)
