A Rechenpfennig was a calculating aid which was used when calculating on lines. Calculating on lines was a calculation method, which was in use in the middle of Europe from the 13th to the 17th century. On a board or cloth subdivided with lines, flat discs mostly made of metal were manipulated. The value of the metal discs, which over time had a coinlike appearance, depended on their positions on the board. From the 15th century onwards, not only the Netherlands, but also the free city of Nuremberg, developed into a center for the production of rake pennants. Even after the transition from the Roman numeric to the Indian numerical code, which made the computation much easier, these pennies were minted as a gambling money until the 19th century.
